Harmon Bell was born in Oakland, California on March 23, 1855, one of the first children of American parentage to be born
there. In 1880 he married Catherine Wilson of Santa Barbara. Bell studied and practiced law in Ohio and Missouri before returning
to Oakland, where he specialized in railroad and real estate law. He was the founding president of the Oakland Commercial
Club and served as the head of the federal food program in Oakland during World War I. Bell died in Piedmont, California on
April 12, 1929.
